Dietary Fiber and Your Patients' Health

Numerous studies suggest that a diet including natural psyllium, the soluble fiber found in Metamucil®, can effectively reduce cholesterol and may reduce postprandial blood sugar levels in patients with non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes.

Cholesterol Lowering and Heart Health
When used as a dietary fiber supplement and as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, the soluble fiber in psyllium husk, as in some Metamucil products, may help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering your patients' cholesterol levels. Seven grams per day of soluble fiber from psyllium husk, the kind found in Metamucil, may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol. In clinical trials, the soluble fiber in Metamucil was shown to lower blood cholesterol levels, and high cholesterol is a risk factor associated with heart disease.

Improved Blood Sugar
Clinical trials suggest that adding psyllium, the fiber found in Metamucil, to non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes patients' diet can help lower postprandial blood sugar levels. In one study, serum glucose levels in the psyllium diet group were 19.2 percent lower immediately following lunch and 11 percent lower all day, relative to placebo.

 • Post-lunch glucose levels declined 6.5 percent in the psyllium diet group and rose 12.7     percent in the placebo group.
 • All-day glucose levels declined 4.2 percent in the psyllium diet group and rose 6.8     percent in the placebo group.
